Why did you join the TriNetX network?
The MetroHealth System had been involved in clinical research match and with large electronic health record aggregation tools for nearly a decade. During his fellowship training at Partners Healthcare in Boston at this time, Dr. David Kaelber, Chief Informatics Officer at The MetroHealth System became aware of TriNetX and it was immediately clear the company offered “the next generation” of these types of tools.
Dr. Kaelber and the MetroHealth System were initially attracted because of the research match functionality. As a relatively small academic medical center, the MetroHealth System is always looking for ways to increase clinical research exposure and opportunities. TriNetX seemed like a great partner to help with this.
What are your use cases for TriNetX?
We continue to use TriNetX for its research match function, but the ability to perform retrospective, observational clinical trials using TriNetX has greatly exceeded all expectations. The MetroHealth System now has almost 500 TriNetX accounts, which allows researchers of all types, but especially trainees (medical students and residents/fellows), to do research that would be impossible to do without TriNetX. Additionally, the growth of TriNetX’s built-in analytics has been game changing in enabling meaningful research.
We also aggressively publicize that TriNetX is available for use and that we have support to help our researchers use the TriNetX tools. We are starting to integrate TriNetX into several courses and have a TriNetX users’ group. This has all led to The MetroHealth System being the highest user of TriNetX (in terms of queries per month) for the last few years.

How do you envision growing your partnership with TriNetX?
There are several opportunities for maximizing our TriNetX partnership into the future.
On the research match side, continuing to increase the sensitivity and specificity, probably tailoring a little more to healthcare organization priorities and resources, so that the “successful match rate” of potential research matches increases.
On the retrospective observational studies side, continuing to:
Increase patients
Increase the number of patients in the various TriNetX networks.
Grow searchable data elements and standardization
Increase the data elements searchable in TriNetX (e.g., type of payer and/or other items to point more to social determinants of health) as well as the standardization of submissions from healthcare organizations (e.g., not allowing date shifting of data more then 30 days or even 7 days or less and having data updates from healthcare organizations of no more than 30 days or even 7 days or less).
Deploy more features and functionality for analytics features and functions
Deploy more features and functionality to randomly select a certain number of patients from a cohort, to allow analytics to occur and build in regression analysis.
Develop best practices
Work with customers to increase their use of TriNetX and develop “best practices” in terms of on-boarding and support.
How many papers have been published with TriNetX since joining our network?
There have been over 65 peer-reviewed manuscripts published by The MetroHealth System using TriNetX since 2020. We have also presented numerous abstracts at regional and national meetings based on our work with TriNetX.
